Explore the journey from white to black belt in traditional Shotokan Karate. Each belt represents a stage of skill development and personal growth.
9th Kyu
Beginner level. Students learn basic stances, punches, blocks and kicks. Focus on developing proper form and discipline.
8th Kyu
Foundation level. Students refine basic techniques and begin to understand proper movement and flow between techniques.
7th Kyu
Students begin to develop coordination and timing. Focus on combination techniques and introduction to more complex movement patterns.
6th Kyu
Intermediate level. Students develop more powerful techniques and begin to understand the application of kata movements in self-defense scenarios.
5th Kyu
Advanced intermediate level. Students focus on developing speed, power, and precision in their techniques, with increased emphasis on sparring applications.
4th Kyu
High-intermediate level. Students refine speed and power in techniques while deepening their understanding of kata applications and developing more advanced sparring skills.
3rd Kyu
Advanced student level. Students develop deeper understanding of karate principles, focusing on power, speed, and practical applications of techniques.
2nd Kyu
Advanced student level with increased responsibility. Students continue to refine techniques with greater emphasis on teaching and leadership abilities.
1st Kyu
Pre-black belt level. Final preparation for black belt candidacy with comprehensive mastery of all prior techniques and principles.
1st Dan and above
Expert level. Black Belt signifies mastery of basics and the beginning of a deeper journey into karate. Further progression through dan ranks indicates continued development and expertise.
Children can start karate from the age of 5.
For your first class, comfortable sports clothes like sweatpants and a t-shirt are fine. If you decide to continue training, you'll need to purchase a karate gi (uniform).
On average, it takes approximately 4-5 years of consistent training to reach black belt level. However, the journey is different for everyone, and we focus on personal growth rather than rushing through ranks.
Karate is a very safe martial art when practiced properly. Safety is our priority. We teach controlled techniques and proper form to minimize risk. Karate actually helps prevent injuries by improving body awareness and coordination.
